Awards are important. Let’s get that straight right from the beginning. Awards give the winner recognition. But when awards spring up everywhere you look, and awards are given away easily these days, I get my doubts. Is the award deserved? Is it deserved by the winner, more than someone else who did not receive an award? Is the person or institution giving the award doing it without an ulterior motive? I’m not a party pooper. And I don’t want to be an award-pooper either. After all, I have also won the odd award (and prize money). And I don’t mean a lucky draw. So why am I suspicious? I guess that with so many awards flying around, it’s difficult to differentiate between true awards, and spin camouflaged as awards. A good indicator is whether the giver of the award scrambles to get more publicity for himself than for the winner. Remember that the next time you get an award! Awards are important. Spring is in the air...blue skies, sunshine. After long winter months, muddy and grey, Hamburg is once again a nice place to be. Aren’t we lucky? Life is good to us, financial crises or not. But let’s not forget things aren’t perfect in this city – did baby Lara have to die?... Yes, let’s bask in the sun in Stadtpark, or Planten un Blomen. Let’s take a stroll from Baumwall to Landungsbrücken. Let’s enjoy life here. And still, let’s not forget that our city has it’s dark sides. Let’s not look away. Children are in need of help – young lives unable to fend for themselves. Take a minute’s break, smell the spring air, look at the sun. Spend a minute in silence for baby Lara.
